As DOPs, we do not make images so much to be seen as we make them to be felt

This is what Henri Alekan, DoP of “Beauty and the Beast” (by Jean Cocteau) and one of my early teachers in cinematography used to say.

I feel cinematography is a direct language to the heart of the audience of a film. I always strive to find the best approach to make people experience the story through the visuals. I look for ways to enhance the emotional impact of a scene using light, shadows, color, composition, lenses and camera movement...

I tend to stay away from merely decorative imagery and chose mostly to devise the look that is best suited to tell a story, however bold it has to be. In short, I try to carve and shape the visuals in such a way that they become as powerful a narrative element as possible.

To achieve this, one of my great pleasures is to collaborate with a director who is willing to make use of the full scope of the narrative potential of the film image and find with them the right language and look for a story.

Through the years, my approach has evolved into a more instinctual one. After a thorough initial preparation period, I use my knowledge to personally "interpret" the story alongside the actors under the directions of a director.

A few words about me…

I am a French cinematographer, member of the AFC, based in Paris. I am active for some 30+ years shooting fiction, commercials, docs, pop promos… on all five continents. Over the last decade I have been working mostly on international projects. It is a great pleasure for me to collaborate with crews from around the world and create together a film object using the common universal language of cinema.
